Chef Receives World-Class Care for
Tongue Cancer

A diagnosis of late-stage tongue cancer brought out the best in famed Chicago chef Grant Achatz, and in the physicians at the University of Chicago Medical Center as well.

Determined to keep his sense of taste, Achatz looked for physicians capable of providing an effective alternative option to surgical removal of most of the tongue, the standard treatment for Stage 4b tongue cancer.

He found those physicians in the Medical Center’s team of head-and-neck- cancer specialists. They developed an aggressive treatment plan that combined chemotherapy and radiation. Within a few months, Achatz was cancer free, without the operation that would have threatened his life’s work.

“Where other doctors at prominent institutions saw little hope of a normal life, let alone a cure, these doctors saw an opportunity to think differently.’’ -Grant Achatz, chef
